Concerns from Proposed Attendance Zone Meeting at Summerville High

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

1.                       Ashborough East—not against being moved to the new school (happy, in fact). We do not want to be moved to Ashley Ridge and then, when the new schools and growth occur, being moved back to Ft. Dorchester High School.

2.                       As the students are moving up, will the same academic offerings be provided at the new school as the existing schools? Will the students have to attend another school to attend a class?

3.                       Will the school only start with JV since the grade levels will be only 9th and 10th grade?

4.                       How much an impact does the school board have with the county council to control growth? Is there anything that the parents can do to help control the explosive building growth occurring in the county and causing the problems in the school district?

5.                       Could the new mascot of Ashley Ridge High School be the Swamp Fox (due to the historical background of the surrounding land)?

6.                       In 2008 and 2009, I will have a 9th grader and an 11th grader—will I have to provide the transportation for the 11th grader to remain at Ft. Dorchester?

7.                       Quail Arbor is happy to stay at Summerville High School—but we are on the edge. Is it possible that it will be changed to the new school?

8.                       Can the band be addressed at the sports meeting to clarify their status?

9.                       Was poverty level a criterion when choosing the attendance lines?

10.              Are the numbers including all grades or only the rising 9th and 10th grades?

11.              Why did the district use Hwy 61 as the dividing line instead of Dorchester Road? There are several new large subdivisions between Hwy 61 and Dorchester Road and the new students could be placed at the new school.

12.              Can a package or brochure be created to help parents “sell” Ashley Ridge to the transferring students with their difficult transition?

13.              The traffic is already bad at the intersection of 165 and Dorchester Rd. Can some of the subdivisions on 61 be switched to the new school to help alleviate the congestion in the area?

14.              Are there any plans to widen Dorchester Road to help alleviate the congestion as well?

15.              I don’t care where my child goes because all the schools are good. I care that the schools are overcrowded. Are there plans to institute an impact fee as was brought up when FDHS opened eight years ago?

16.              How will the district fund the fine arts programs, not only at the new school, but at all the existing schools as well?

17.              Will they provide more buses with the new schools and growth? What can we do to help with the transportation situation?

18.              Can you do a better job of advertising the meeting to include more people from the community?

Concerns from Proposed Attendance Zone Meeting at Ft. Dorchester High School

Monday, April 30th, 2007

1. The Ponds (representative from the development): where are the students going to high school? Currently, Summerville High School.

2. Why is the Ridgeville area zoned for Summerville High School not zoned to the new high school when the routes are closer? The residents would prefer not to go back into the town of the Summerville.

3.  Please clarify the subdivisions on highway 61 to make sure that the residents know where they are going.

4.  Happy with the new plan (resident from Summerhaven).

5.  The Bluffs of Ashley River understood that they would go to the new school—why are we still zoned to Summerville High School.

6.  Why are some subdivisions in the new school zone going across traffic flows when new subdivisions are zoned to Summerville Schools that are closer to the new school?

7.Many of the neighborhoods in the new school’s zone will cause traffic problems on the routes that lead to the new school—the district needs to look at the neighborhoods closer to the new school to alleviate the possible traffic problems.
